Mediterranean Energy Perspective 2025 official launch in Brussels
On 3 September 2025, one month ahead of the European Commission’s adoption of its New Pact for the Mediterranean, OMEC, as Secretariat of the UfM working group on Gas, Emissions Abatement and Hydrogen, officially launched MEP 2025 in Brussels, Belgium. Hosted by IOGP Europe (International Association of Oil & Gas Producers), the event gathered over 130 policymakers, industry leaders and civil society representatives to discuss regional energy challenges and opportunities for cooperation. The event featured the official presentation of the Mediterranean Energy Perspectives 2025, as well as two high-level panels on the region’s net-zero pathways and investment outlook to 2050, and on the role of gas in balancing energy security and decarbonization.
Exchanges highlighted both the opportunities and risks ahead: the Mediterranean is a key energy corridor rich in renewables, hydrocarbons, and CO₂ storage potential. Yet without sufficient investment, stronger energy efficiency efforts and integration of the energy systems, the region faces higher energy costs, slower emissions reductions, and lost industrial competitiveness. Targeted cooperation and timely investments could unlock a more resilient, competitive, and sustainable energy future for all countries in the region.
Released in July 2025, the new edition of the Mediterranean Energy Perspectives (MEP) 2025 proposes a comprehensive outlook on the region’s energy landscape through 2050. MEP 2025 explores updated Net-Zero and Reference scenarios,(1) outlining pathways for governments, companies, and citizens to achieve decarbonization and limit global warming to 1.5°C.
(1) The Net-Zero Carbon ProMED Scenario is co-funded by the European Union.
