Mediterranean energy and natural gas perspectives
On 3 December 2025, the OMEC, as Secretariat of the UfM working group on Gas, Emissions Abatement and Hydrogen and with the support of the European Commission, presented the results of the last OMEC Mediterranean Energy Perspectives to 2050 (MEP 2025) released in June 2025. Organized in a capacity building session format, the online meeting provided an overview of the most important factors and uncertainties likely to affect the Mediterranean energy trends over the next 25 years under two scenarios; a reference scenario and a net-zero carbon emissions scenario. The event brought together about 30 delegates from institutions and the industry from both shores of the Mediterranean Sea, who actively engaged with OMEC analysts and modelers ensuring the success of the event.
In their welcoming remarks, OMEC and the European Commission highlighted the critical importance of collaboration, innovation, and strategic partnerships in energy matters between all stakeholders of the Euro-Mediterranean region. The establishment of the new Directorate-General for Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf (DG MENA) of the European Commission signals a renewed commitment to regional stability, sustainability, and cooperation. This momentum is further strengthened by the Pact for the Mediterranean, which was launched on 28 November 2025, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Process. During the meeting, OMEC experts also emphasized that reaching current climate targets will require stringent energy efficiency policies and measures, including significant behavioural changes, and strengthened regional cooperation.
